Communication Arts

Standard 1: Uses language to communicate

Benchmark 1: Uses spoken/expressive language to communicate ideas and feelings

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. use simple pronouns (ex: I, me, you, he, she, mine) correctly. 
  2. memorize simply rhymes, songs or fingerplays. 
  3. use complete sentences.
  4. use personal experiences, knowledge and/or feelings when speaking.
  5. ask questions to increase understanding including “how” questions.
  6. verbalize first and last name and identify all classmates by name. 
  7. ask for help as needed.
  8. make relevant contributions in group discussions. 

Benchmark 2: Uses listening/receptive language for communication

A Preschool student will be able to:

  3. snip with scissors. 
  4. begin to grasp scissors with thumb on top. 
  5. begin to use scissors to cut on a given line.
  6. tear paper.
  7. roll play dough into snakes and balls. 
  8. string 6-8 half inch beads.
  9. follow a sequence of holes when lacing.
  10. unzip and begin to zip.
  11. unsnap and begin to snap.
  12. work interlocking puzzles up to 6 pieces.

Benchmark 2: Demonstrates emergent writing skills

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. copy circles, vertical, horizontal and crossed lines.
  2. use correct directionality (left to right, top to bottom) when forming letters.
  3. reproduce some shapes and some uppercase letters with writing utensils. 
  4. write or draw; separated scribbles, shapes, pictures, to convey a story. 
  5. draw a recognizable person consisting of a circle and lines for arms and legs.

Math

A Preschool student will be able to:

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. demonstrate the following locomotor skills: walk forward, walk backward, hop, walk on toes, run, jump, jump off steps/structures, roll, slide, climb, bend over, stand on one foot, chase, flee, dodge.
  2. demonstrate the following non-locomotor skills: push, pull, bend, stretch, twist, turn, lift, swing, stop, dodge, balance.
  3. begin to recognize and respect self or personal space and general space.
  4. follow directions, levels, pathways and time.
  5. begin to recognize and understand basic body parts, kinesthetic feelings, body in space and the body in relation to objects and others.

A Preschool student will be able to:

  2. comprehend that muscles are part of the body and help us move.
  3. practice basic stretching exercises for the shoulders, legs, arms, and back. 

Benchmark 2: Express interest in participation and performance of activity

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. associate the positive feelings derived from movement with the physical activity experience so that movement becomes an enjoyable lifelong habit.
  2. participate three to five days each week in moderate to vigorous physical activities that increase breathing and heart rate.

Benchmark 3:  Show basic knowledge of nutrition

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. comprehend the role of healthy food in providing energy for physical activity.
  2. comprehend that water is important for the body.

Benchmark 2:  Display knowledge and comprehension of the sports units

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. practice and participate in games and events pertaining to each sports unit.
  2. comprehend the rules and instructions for each sports unit.
  3. display appropriate sportsmanship.
  4. demonstrate warm-up activities.
  5. practice and participate in cooperative and individual activities.
  6. respect feedback from self and others.

Science

Standard 1: Demonstrates an understanding of life and earth science concepts

Benchmark 1: Demonstrates an understanding of the human body 

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. identify the following body parts: eyes, ears, nose, mouth, tongue, teeth, chin, shoulders, fingers, hands, elbow, wrist, knee, ankle, toes and foot.
  2. understand the basic functions of known body parts.
  3. match the five senses to the corresponding body parts.
  4. understand that experiences come from our senses. 

Benchmark 2: Develops a knowledge of healthy habits and nutrition 

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. understand the concept of the food groups.
  2. differentiate between healthy and non-healthy foods.
  3. understand the concept of cooking.
  4. demonstrate basic hygiene practices (washing hands, eating healthy foods.).
  5. understand the basic concept of dental health. 

Benchmark 3: Demonstrates and understanding of animal and insect life

  1. recognize different kinds of animals, their characteristics, needs and uses.

  1. answer questions and/or test predictions using simple experiments (ex: cracking a nut to look inside).
  2. ask and answer questions about objects, organisms, and events in their environment.

Social Studies

Standard 1: Demonstrates an understanding of basic social studies concepts

Benchmark 1: Demonstrates an understanding of the relationships between people and places  

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. identify personal attributes (boy/girl, whole name, age, hair and eye color).
  2. identify immediate and extended family members including the distinguishing gender.  
  3. conceptualize different holidays celebrated throughout the year. 
  4. identify occupations and their roles in the community. 
  5. begin to demonstrate an understanding of home, school and community. 
  6. create simple “maps” or drawings of familiar places. 
  7. match objects to usual locations (for example: tree in park, bed in bedroom).

Spanish

Benchmark 1: Colors

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. understand Spanish words for colors (rojo, azul, amarillo, verde, anaranjado, morado, blanco, negro, rosa, and café).
  2. repeat Spanish word for colors in oral language.
  3. match primary, secondary, white, black and brown colors when instructed in Spanish.

Benchmark 2: Numbers

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. count to 20.
  2. understand Spanish words for numbers to 20.
  3. match written number to the spoken number in Spanish.

Benchmark 3: Shapes

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. understand Spanish words for shapes (triangulo, cuadrado, rectángulo, círculo, rombo, corazón, y ovalo).
  2. use the Spanish words for shapes in oral language.

Benchmark 4: Personal Information and Basic Greetings

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. say hello and good bye in Spanish.
  2. describe themselves in Spanish using contrasts – big/small, pretty, brave, smart and strong.
  3. tell who is in their family in Spanish using Spanish for mom, dad, brother, sister, and grandparents.

Benchmark 5: Body Parts

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. understand Spanish words for their body (cara, cabeza, nariz, orejas, boca, dientes, ojos, manos, dedos, pies).
  2. use Spanish words for the above body parts when singing.
  3. point to body parts when singing.

Benchmark 6: Opposites

A Preschool student will be able to:

  1. understand grande/pequeño, día/noche, alto/bajo, rápido/despacio, niño/nina in Spanish.
  2. use opposites when singing in Spanish.
  3. use appropriate actions to show vocabulary understanding.

  1. understand the verbs ‘ser’  in first person to say their name.
