At Oakhill, we know that middle school is a time of exciting growth—academically, socially, and personally. Students are discovering their strengths, learning how to manage responsibilities, and gaining confidence in their abilities. To support this important stage, we’re proud to offer two unique opportunities through our Student Support Services program: MAS Mentors and Task Tacklers.

Both initiatives are designed to help students succeed—whether by leading and supporting their peers or by developing the habits that build independence.

MAS Mentors: Leading Through Learning

Our MAS (Math & Spanish) Mentors program gives middle school students the chance to serve as academic role models for their classmates. Mentors volunteer to help peers strengthen their understanding of Math and Spanish while sharing strategies for focus, organization, and problem-solving.

Mentors may:

  • Work alongside classmates as a tutor or homework helper

  • Practice problems together

  • Share study and organization tips

  • Provide encouragement and accountability

Why It Matters:
Serving as a mentor helps students reinforce their own subject knowledge while developing leadership, empathy, and communication skills. It’s an opportunity to grow as a learner and make a meaningful contribution to the Oakhill community.

Task Tacklers: Building Independence and Focus

The Task Tacklers program is designed for students who want to strengthen their executive functioning skills—essential tools for success both in and out of the classroom.

In each session, Task Tacklers learn practical strategies for managing time, staying organized, and following through on assignments.

Students practice:

  • Using timers to balance focus and breaks

  • Writing down tasks and checking them off

  • Estimating time for assignments

  • Breaking larger projects into smaller steps

This program is especially valuable for students who sometimes find it challenging to start homework independently, stay focused without reminders, or manage multiple assignments at once.

How to Get Involved

Students interested in becoming MAS Mentors or Task Tacklers can apply during the school year through the Student Support Services team.

Parents who feel their child would benefit from mentorship or extra structure can reach out to Delaney Dowd and their child’s homeroom teacher to learn more and arrange a session time that fits their schedule.

Meeting Times: Before school (8:00–8:30) or after school (3:45–4:15)
Location: The Learning Lab or another designated middle school space

Growing Together at Oakhill

Through MAS Mentors and Task Tacklers, students gain the confidence, responsibility, and self-awareness that define a strong learner and leader. Whether guiding a peer or building new habits, every participant takes a meaningful step toward success in middle school—and beyond.
