COVID-19 FAQ's for Parents
Q. How will Oakhill communicate with parents and students?
A. Oakhill plans to communicate with families and students regularly. We will keep our coronavirus webpage updated, often with helpful insights as well as all-important email communications from the school regarding this situation.
Students will connect with their teachers through emails, phone calls, and videos through Seesaw, Google, and the Oakhill HUB (if applicable). Division Heads will also be in communication with families often to provide updates on any developments in the Distance Learning Plan, and to serve as a bridge to maintain a cohesive bond between family and school during this time.
School-wide messaging will come from either Suzanne McCanles, Head of School, or through the ACORN, the school newsletter. We plan to check in with families often to ensure that everyone has the best possible distance learning experience.
Q. Will online learning extend beyond Friday, April 24?
A. As of now, the plan is to continue distance learning through Friday, April 24, and to return to on-campus classes on Monday, April 27. However, as this is an ongoing and quickly changing situation, we will re-evaluate the schedule for online learning closer to April 24, also looking at recommendations made by city officials.
Q. What Oakhill events are currently canceled?
A. All Oakhill events are canceled through April 24. This includes sports, extracurriculars, Extended Day, Middle School Trips, and parent events. The school calendar on the HUB will be kept up-to-date concerning cancellations and rescheduling or postponements.
With the uncertainty of the COVID-19 impact, we have not made any decisions about events extended past April 24. As events are rescheduled or canceled either through Oakhill or by outside entities, we will communicate these changes with parents and students.
Q. Are the campuses open?
A. Both campuses were closed to foot traffic on Wednesday, March 18, for thorough cleaning and will remain closed through Monday, April 27. No one is allowed on the campuses until then. This includes outdoor play areas and gyms.
Q. Will the school year be extended?
A. There is currently no plan to extend the school year, and we anticipate ending the year as scheduled.
Q. What are the plans for Distance Learning?
A. Each Division Head emailed a detail of the Distance Learning Plan to their students/families. This plan is also detailed on the school’s COVID-19 webpage. If you have any questions about your child’s plan, please contact your child’s division head.
Q. What will the academic day be for my student?
A. Our hope is that you will utilize the AM for instruction, and the afternoon is spent getting fresh air or taking advantage of teacher office hours. This plan may vary from grade level to grade level. Specific schedule information was sent to you by your child’s Division Head and can be found on our COVID-19 webpage.
Early childhood and lower school:
Make plans for childcare if your situation requires that.
Ensure that your child can access their learning activities and that they complete them daily. Also, please supervise your child whenever they are using a device with internet access.
Ensure your child has time to play outside each day.
Share feedback with your child’s teachers.
Regularly check email from Oakhill and Seesaw.
Decide what device your children will use with adult help to view videos and other messages sent by their teacher(s).
Intermediate and middle school:
Have your child put their phone away during scheduled class time.
Establish routines and expectations for your child.
Identify a space in your home for your child to work without distraction on their assigned work.
Regularly check email from Oakhill and Google Classroom or Seesaw (if applicable)l.
Contact adviser and/or classroom teacher with questions or concerns.
Q. If I need to contact someone at Oakhill, what number do I call?
A. Call the main school number, 816.436.6228. We are answering that number during regular hours (8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.).

Q. Will families receive any refunds?
A. Because we do not know the outcome and the impact of the coronavirus situation, we are monitoring the fiscal health of Oakhill, including how this may affect our families and our faculty and staff. Although we understand we are not going to be together physically for the next couple of weeks, we will provide the best possible educational experience for our students.
As for specific areas of our school operations:
Extended Day & Lunch Charges
On or about April 5, you will receive your SMART Tuition billed. Included in this upcoming billing are purchases from the Mercantile, lunch add-ons, and after school care up to March 6. If you utilized Kids Club the first week of spring break, you will see that charge added to SMART. This bill will also include tuition and enrollment fees, if applicable.
We are refunding a portion of the all-inclusive lunch and after school care billing for the isolation period of March 23 through April 24.
We will refund activities/clubs for this period as well.
Extracurriculars & Summer Program
Q. What about spring sports and other extracurricular activities?
A. Oakhill-managed extracurricular activities, including Kids Club and after-school programs are canceled through April 24.
No team sports will hold practices while the Oakhill Campus is closed. When students can return to campus and to practice, we will reassess the rest of the athletic season.
The Athletic Director, Kellen Smith, will communicate virtual/alternative athletic training for the athletic spring season.
Q. Will the school continue to offer Summer Programs?
A. Yes, we plan to offer Summer Programs. Families can enroll online for Summer Fully Charged at www.oakhilldayschool.org/summer.
TITAN CONSTRUCTION MASTERPLAN
Q. Will the Titan Fund construction project still take place?
A. The Titan Fund construction project is on track to continue as long as construction workers are allowed to work.
Q. Will the timing of construction be delayed?
A. Although our construction project is on schedule, the timing of construction may be affected by our period of distance learning.
