ACORN Monthly

Welcome back for the 2026/27 school year! It’s so weird saying that, I remember the 2016/17 school year like it was yesterday! I graduated high school in 2007 which also means this is my 20th year high school reunion … I actually just realized that a couple weeks ago! Reflecting on how fast time has already gone makes me look at the here and now and the moments that will go even faster the older I get. My daughter will be in 2nd grade this year and my son will be in Kindergarten. They are growing up so fast and my darn iPhone likes to pull up photo memories from when they were little … My allergies always seem to flare up when I look at those old pictures! 

The truth is, it’s easy for time to go fast when we get into our daily routines. Don’t get me wrong, routines are good for kids, but without making time to appreciate the little moments you can very easily go from August to May in the blink of an eye. As the school year begins I want to do a better job of slowing down to appreciate all the fun events/activities at school and outside of school while we are in this short window of parenthood. Time you can’t ever get back once it’s gone!

I’m really glad your family has chosen to be at Oakhill this year. We have worked hard to create a community atmosphere within our walls that helps you meet lifelong friends, partner with your child’s teacher and spend lots of time together building memories as a family. As I write this article while summer camp is coming to an end, I can look down the hallway and see many of our former students as camp counselors! I taught most of those students from the ages of 2-14 … I feel like they were middle school students just yesterday! The really cool thing is that those alumni students like to recount their fondest memories at Oakhill with me, and many share that they still hang out with friends from their class to this day! Our alumni students and families have built strong lasting memories, just the same way I know you will if you are new to Oakhill.

My biggest encouragement to you this year is to come be a part of as many community events as you can. Family time outside of school is also important, but look at your calendars now and mark down events to plan ahead for what you can attend.. Come to lunch with your child on occasion, attend middle school sporting events, set up playdates with friends in your child’s class, ride the train at Train Night, volunteer with PTO, take part in the carnival coming soon, etc. The more involved you are the more people you will meet which will make your Oakhill experience the best it can be.  

You will hear more from me this year through a variety of educational and parenting Acorn articles as well as regular emails keeping you up to date. Your classroom teacher will communicate with you the most, so don’t worry I will do my best not to flood your inbox! Always feel free to reach out to me or stop in if you have any questions!
