ACORN Monthly

Ahhh, summer! Ever since I was young, summer has always been my favorite time of year. I love almost everything about it … the heat, the longer days, tanned skin, late night ice cream runs, trips out of town and visitors to town, concerts, festivals, fairs, events … I relish it all (except mosquitos)! In fact, I often question why I still live in KC when the cold weather settles in (the answer is family) but in all honesty, if I had summer all year long I would wipe myself out. Every year I have great intentions to have a laid-back summer season, and, well, that has yet to happen. But that’s ok! I have the school year to enjoy calmer days (insert winky face). Truth be told, I enjoy hustle and bustle, which is a good thing for both my personal and professional life! 

While there are still some summer days left to enjoy, the calendar has turned the page to August and the countdown to the first day is in the not-so-distant future! In the midst of all of the summer fun, we’ve been busy at work here at Oakhill preparing for the school year. The halls of the South Building are quiet, I look forward to the return of the faculty and students to liven it up! 

To kick off the year there are those not-to-miss events that you’ll want to make sure are on your calendar, including:

• Back to School Bash. This event is August 18 from 6:30-8:00. It’s a drop in event, so stop by anytime to get your t-shirt, drop off or fill out forms, learn about clubs, offerings and more! Intermediate students can pop into their classrooms and drop off supplies while middle school students can pick up their schedules (if, by chance, you can’t make it, your child will receive their schedule on the first day of school). Middle School students do not need to bring any supplies to this event. It’s a great way to say “hi” to friends and get ready for the first day of school!
• First Day of School. August 20 is the first day of school for the 2026-27 school year! After the traditional first day pics, stay for the PTO coffee, out in front of both the Main Building and South Building. It’s the perfect way to reconnect with old friends while meeting some new friends!
• Annual School Carnival. This crowd favorite, hosted by PTO, is August 28. It’s the perfect way to kick off the year: games, food and fun! 
• Parents Night. Stop what you are doing right now and circle, star, or highlight in some way September 1 at 6:00 on your calendar. As an educator and as a parent, I can tell you that this is a very important night that you’ll want to be sure to attend. Teachers will go over expectations, curriculum, communications and all of the details to get the year off to a great start. 

You’ll be hearing more as the start date gets closer, but I wanted to be sure you have these important dates marked on your calendar. Swim, stay up late, catch fireflies, eat ice cream for dinner and make the most of these summer days!
