Building Strong Little Hands: Fine Motor Skills in Pre-K!

It has been a busy start to the school year in Mrs. Lafferty’s class! Right now, our main focus is helping students build the fine motor pre-writing skills they need for future classroom success.

Before children learn to write letters or complete independent daily tasks, they need to build muscle strength and dexterity in their hands and fingers. Every pincher movement and squeeze now pays off in writing endurance and independence later on.

Here is a look at what our Pre-K friends have been working on so far:

  • Play-Doh Workouts: Students use "strong hands" to roll, flatten, and shape dough, which builds overall hand strength and endurance.

  • Scissor Skills: We are learning how to handle scissors safely while practicing snips, straight lines, and curved lines to build hand-eye coordination.

  • Tennis Ball "Feeds": Using their "pincher fingers" (thumb and index finger), students squeeze open tennis balls to feed them popcorn kernels. This specific movement directly targets the muscles used to grip a pencil.

  • Pencil Grip: We are continually guiding students on how to hold writing utensils correctly, setting up great habits early.

You can help keep this momentum going at home! Simple activities like tearing paper, playing with clay, or picking up small objects with tweezers are great ways to keep building those little hand muscles.
