Welcome, Chicks!

Welcome, Chicks!

From incubation to hatching to a permanent home; the chicks have left their mark!

Sadie and the kindergarten baby chicks

Kindergarten students recently wrapped up their Eggs and Chicks thematic unit. During this monthlong unit, kindergarten students put their scientific skills to use! They spent time daily observing chicken egg models to identify the parts of an egg. They collected data to countdown how many days the chicks would take to hatch. Students learned how to label egg and chicken diagrams, expanded their vocabulary with new and interesting words like albumen, and practiced their sequencing skills during the hatching process.

Finally hatching day arrived and may have just been the most successful kindergarten chicken hatching ever! Thirty-eight baby chicks called Oakhill their new home for a few weeks. Thank you, Mrs. Beckham and Mrs. Gannon, for sharing your eggs with Oakhill so that all students could observe the process in the kindergarten classrooms and Lower School science lab.

At the culmination of this unit, kindergarteners put on their expert writing hats and created various chick reports to document their knowledge. They shared their reports and final portfolios with Mrs. Clevenger's second grade class to compare knowledge and with their parents at Spring Fling to celebrate a successful unit!
