One Word For Kids!

As we returned from school after the new year, we set out on a journey to discover our “one word.” We discussed that as humans, trying to be better versions of ourselves is something that is important to reflect and act upon. 

We started this project by reading the story, “One Word for Kids,” which is a story about a young boy who is searching for a single, powerful word to guide him to have his best year yet. The book teaches us to look within ourselves, look out into the world, and then to live our words throughout everyday life. The character in the story chose the word positivity. 

After the story, each student was given a notecard and brainstorming time, where they were to look inside themselves and reflect on words they felt connected to. After thinking time, they were asked to choose their one word that they thought would help them to have their best year yet. 

Once their words were chosen, the kids were able to build and create their words using different manipulatives and tools that are available in the Innovation Lab. Third grade students were able to create their words on Canva. 

The pride the kiddos took on this project makes me so proud, and to hear them show their friends their word in the hallway makes it even better. This project is just wrapping up due to other exciting events that have been happening at Oakhill.
