Symphony Meets Science

Symphony Meets Science

The Lower School students enjoyed a field trip to the Kauffman Center of the Performing Arts this week to see KinderKonzerts: Weather Ahead performed by the Kansas City Symphony and guest Chief Meteorologist Bryan Busby of KMBC. The children experienced a weather-filled performance that combined music and science, and featured different types of weather and natural phenomenon.

Kauffman Center of the Performing Arts presents Weather Ahead

As noted in the program guide, selections included “... musical thunder and lightning of Beethoven’s “Thunderstorm” from his Sixth Symphony, Mussorgsky’s tornadic “A Night on Bald Mountain”, and a snowy three-horse sleigh ride in Prokofiev’s “Troika” from Lieutenant Kijé.” The children really enjoyed clapping along to Rossini’s Overture to William Tell and watching the glowing lights change during Debussy’s “Clair de lune.” The program also included Grieg’s “Morning Mood” from Peer Gynt and ended with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” One of the most exciting portions of the trip was when all of the students created their own thunderstorm sound effects using hands and feet. What an amazing sound!

First Graders enjoying the symphony field trip

Oakhill students are fortunate to be able to take many meaningful field trips throughout the school year. Thank you, Mrs. Hill, for taking students of all ages to the symphony year after year where they gain a greater appreciation for the fine arts.
