The Eggs are Here!

The Eggs are Here!

The kindergarten classrooms have started incubating eggs! This year there are three incubators in total with one being in the science lab for all students to see! Kindergarten students are thankful to have received eggs from three different area farms, allowing students to observe a variety of egg colors and increase the likelihood of a successful hatch!

Eggs in the kindergarten incubator

This is one of the students’ favorite units. Strengthening observation skills, building knowledge, and inspiring curiosity are just some of the amazing outcomes students gain. From Day 1 to Day 21, or hatching day, the students are hooked! During this unit, kindergarteners learn how eggs are hatched in nature and compare that to how they are hatched in an incubator. They also gain rich vocabulary, learning words such as albumen, yolk, and fertilize. Furthermore they learn what living things, including chicks, need to grow and survive, becoming the baby chicks’ caretaker for a time after they hatch. At the end of this unit, students use the knowledge they gained to compose a nonfiction book all about chicks. It is amazing to see their learning come to life on the page.
