The Kindergarten Writing Journey

The Kindergarten Writing Journey

The kindergarten students have been busy learning all about nonfiction books this quarter. Their learning began by investigating many different nonfiction books. The students engaged in conversations together about what they noticed in the illustrations, the layout of the text, and information the author shared. They came to the conclusion that nonfiction books teach us true facts!

Throughout this unit, students enjoyed with many read-alouds as a class and determined important information gained from reading. Charts were created, sticky notes were used to mark favorite pages, and facts were written. The kindergarten researchers were ready to write and share their learning with others.

Kindergarten is a big year of writing growth. From oral storytelling, to picture stories, to labels, to whole sentences; kindergarten writers blossom! This quarter the students created a class book of dinosaur facts, which highlighted their knowledge of dinosaur physical characteristics and diet. They also wrote about space, comparing the earth, moon, and sun. During the fourth quarter, students will create a learning notebook that catalogues their learning about the chicken life cycle as they observe the incubation process of eggs right in their classrooms! Their writing will progress to a final nonfiction report that will consist of multiple sentences about all they have learned during their egg and chick unit.

These skills will continue to transform as they learn how to write multiple connected sentences, begin to use transition words, and begin writing paragraphs in first and second grade. As they say in the kindergarten classrooms, "When I'm done, I've just begun!" Writers are always creating! Come stop by the kindergarten hallways to see all of their hard work on display.
