Wonders of the Ocean in Prek

This week, our pre-kindergarten class is embarking on an exciting ocean exploration to escape the snowy weather! As we dive into the many parts of the ocean, our little learners are discovering the wonders of shorelines, coral reefs, kelp forests, deep-sea creatures, and the fascinating world of marine mammals and fish.

In the first few days of our unit, the kids did plenty of painting. They started by creating their own maps, using watercolors to paint the vast ocean. They applied a crayon resist technique to mark the land, Arctic, and Antarctic regions. By painting the entire map and watching how much of it transformed into a beautiful blue, the children gained a clearer, more concrete understanding of how the Earth is mostly water.

The fun continued as the children tapped into their creativity with a starfish craft. They made intricate paintings of these fascinating creatures using Q-tips while strengthening their fine motor skills. You can see the concentration on their faces as they worked on improving their pincer grips to paint.

Learning about the ocean has been the perfect winter escape!
