In a Nutshell: How about a Red Snow Day?

In a Nutshell - January

Who wants another snow day? How about a Red Snow Day? Our students may not truly comprehend just how lucky we are as football fans! The Chiefs have been in 7 consecutive AFC Championships! The Chiefs are heading to their 5th Super Bowl appearance in the last 7 years! They are making history…and are about to celebrate back to back to back Super Bowl wins! I have been a Chiefs fan my entire life…I have ridden the proverbial roller coaster; this type of success is rare and a moment in time I will never forget! Love my Chiefs!

I spent Saturday morning in the Oakhill gym watching a Kindergarten basketball game followed by 1st and 2nd grade basketball with the cheerleaders performing between games! Being a spectator…witnessing the excitement, the teamwork, and the skill development brings a smile to my face! The coaches/referees (one and the same) do their very best to provide opportunities for each player - to dribble, shoot, pass, and defend. In my opinion, each and every player found confidence, growth, and success!

My daughter, Brooke, will study abroad this semester; she is heading to Prague, Czechoslovakia in two weeks! I am excited for her - quite an adventure awaits! Not only will she be immersed in the culture of Prague, but she will spend weekends traveling throughout Europe exploring cities and sites while taking in the culture and cuisine! Kevin and I are planning a visit over Spring Break; Rick Steves' Prague travel guide along with travel youtube videos have helped us determine the “must-sees” in and around Prague!

I credit the educational experience Brooke enjoyed at Oakhill with her independence, thirst for learning, and overall confidence. Growing up (preschool through 8th grade) within the Oakhill walls…in the safe and welcoming Oakhill halls…surrounded and supported by talented and caring teachers…in a predictable and comfortable school community helped shape her into who she is today!

This educational experience is made up of many pieces and parts - the entirety of the school day, community events, athletic competitions, music and drama opportunities, panther parties, buddy families, recess, lunch, academic related contests, before school clubs, after school activities, making mistakes, along with each and every interaction at Oakhill. Each and every second is a learning experience - a time for growth, development and reflection.

We…the employees at Oakhill…get to see, hear, and feel this experience every single day! We do our best to communicate with YOU about school life and happenings within the classroom, yet nothing compares to “being there”! Pictures may speak 1000 words, but seeing teaching and learning in action speaks even louder. It is with that thought…that desire…and the success of the Global Celebration/Showcase that the STEM and Fine Arts Showcases were born!

We hope to see you on Wednesday for our first ever STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Showcase - 3:30-5:30 pm in the Main Building! Subject area teachers have created…curated an experience to highlight the strength, successes, and focus on STEM - for every grade level - at Oakhill! This is a come and explore event, and we hope you have the time/make the time/take the time to come and be a part of it -  launching rockets, coding robots, solving math challenges, exploring the muscular system, tackling engineering tasks, and creating special effects with the magic of the green screen.

Mark your calendars right now for our Fine Arts Showcase on April 23rd! Our music, art, Communications, and Communication Arts Departments will highlight curriculum, projects, performances, the written word, and interactive fun! More detailed information will be shared soon!

I hope to see all of you at Parent/Teacher Conferences - such a pivotal and powerful checkpoint for the school/teacher/parent/student partnership! We look forward to discussion, dialogue, and connection; a time to make sure WE are meeting YOUR expectations, as well as your child’s needs!

Thank you for being an integral part of Oakhill’s educational experience,

Suzanne
