Lifeskills During the Holidays

Lifeskills During the Holidays

“Have you seen our lifeskills…” In both buildings you’ll find this saying on a wall, along with photos featuring students who have been recognized for demonstrating one of the lifeskills we are focusing on this year-respect, responsibility, honesty and kindness. While we continue to teach all lifeskills, by narrowing it down to these four it helps us be intentional in working toward instilling the Oakhill Way in our students.

Both at school and at home, opportunities abound during the holiday where lifeskills can be naturally reinforced with children. From school parties and performances to family gatherings and more, there are ample opportunities to practice flexibility. With all of these disruptions to the schedule because of all of these fun events, kids may find themselves wanting to act up or get a case of the sillies. Reminding them of behaviors expected, no matter what the situation gives them a chance to work on self control.

There are many great causes to get involved during the holidays. Adopting a family, donating toys to a drive or baking cookies for a neighbor are just a few ways for students to practice the skill of service to others. This also assists with instilling caring and compassion into children.

Fairness is a big one that can come up during the holiday season. Kids may think that a sibling received more or better gifts than they did. When that happens it’s a great jumping off point to discuss fairness. Often this is difficult for children to grasp, they have a strong sense of when they perceive to have been wronged. Ongoing discussions about what is fair (versus what is equal) go a long way to instill this important skill.

Teaching lifeskills is a cooperative effort between home and school. By working together, we can guide children to live the Oakhill Way each and every day!
