Screen & Seen: Navigating Online Spaces - The Digital Tattoo

Social Media Safety from Common Sense Media

In today’s digital world, every post, text message, or comment in a game chat contributes to your child's "digital tattoo"—a permanent online record that’s nearly impossible to erase. Unlike a real tattoo, which requires a deliberate decision, digital tattoos are created with every click, often without much thought. Helping your child understand the long-lasting impact of their online actions is vital to preparing them for the future. Start the conversation by explaining that even after a message is deleted, screenshots or saved images can keep it alive forever. This understanding can encourage them to think twice before hitting “send” or “post.”

When you talk about their digital tattoo, keep it casual and focus on the bigger picture. Remind them that everything they share—whether it’s on social media, in texts, or during game chats—is a reflection of who they are. Ask questions like, “Would you be okay with a teacher or future coach reading this?” or “How would you feel if this went viral?” It’s not about scaring them but helping them think through the possible outcomes. Role-playing tricky situations, like responding to a mean comment in a group chat or dealing with pressure to send something they’re not comfortable with equips kids with the skills to navigate the digital world thoughtfully and responsibly.

Above all, let them know you’re here to support them. Share your own stories—both good and bad—about navigating online spaces. Encourage them to pause and ask themselves, “Is this helpful or hurtful? Could this be taken the wrong way?” before they send a message or share something. When you keep the tone friendly and open, kids are more likely to come to you with their questions and challenges. Together, you can help them build a positive and thoughtful digital tattoo that sets them up for success.
