Spelling Bee Season is Here!

Spelling Bee Season is Here!

We are excited to announce the upcoming Oakhill Day School Spelling Bee, an official qualifying event for the Mid-Continent Regional Spelling Bee and ultimately the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The timeline for the Oakhill Day School Spelling Bee is as follows:

By September 18: Grade Level Spelling Word Lists, Great Words, Great Works book lists, and information regarding rules and study tips will be sent home with 3rd-8th grade students.

*Due to Scripps Spelling Bee Rules, the word lists cannot be sent electronically. A printed copy will be sent home in your child's backpack. Additional copies of  the leveled word lists and the full 2024-2025 Classroom Spelling Bee Study Lists are available by request.

October 15-18: Classroom Spelling Bees will be held

Your child’s teacher will send home the date of their classroom bee so your child can prepare. The winner from each classroom will move on to the school-wide spelling bee. The classroom bee runner-up will be an alternate should the winner be unable to compete in the school-wide bee.

November 12: Oakhill Day School Spelling Bee 4:30 PM

Classroom winners will compete in a school-wide bee. The winner will receive a personalized trophy and an invitation to proceed to the Mid-Continent Public Library Regional Bee.

February 12-19: The Oakhill Day School school champion will participate in the Mid-Continent Public Library Online Semifinal Bee.

March 1: If the school winner successfully competes in the semifinal bee, they will compete in the Mid-Continent Public Library Final Spelling Bee. The winner of this bee will proceed on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

How to Prepare

We encourage every student to prepare for participation in the Classroom Spelling Bee. Your child should study their grade level list, while also keeping in mind that if the individuals in their grade are spelling all of those words correctly, we will continually advance to the next list until we have 2 top students from that grade to take to the School-Wide Spelling Bee on November 12, 2024.

This year, all of the words from the Scripps 2024-2025 School Spelling Bee Study List will be taken from engaging, grade-appropriate books found on the Great Works, Great Words booklist, allowing your students to get to know these words in the context of great stories. Most of the titles on this book list can be found in our school library and we encourage your family to check them out.

Visit the Scripps Spelling Bee website to find parent and student resources and study tips.

Once students have mastered their grade-specific words provided, they can move on to the Full 2024-2025 School Spelling Bee Study List available by request.

If you have any questions about the bee or how to prepare your student for Scripps, please feel free to contact Kristin Forsen or Joy Jackson.
