Bike Week at Oakhill

Bike Week at Oakhill, student giving a thumbs up in biking gear

Biking Takes Over PE at Oakhill

Last week, our 3rd–5th grade students had the exciting opportunity to participate in Bike Week with guidance from BikeWalk KC. The BikeWalk KC team came to Oakhill to teach students how to ride a bike while also focusing on essential bike safety skills. Throughout the week, students learned about the rules of the road for cyclists, traffic signs, and proper hand signals for turning and stopping. Each day, BikeWalk KC instructors set up engaging courses in the gym, starting with basic skills on Day 1 and gradually increasing the level of difficulty as students built confidence and ability.

Students who needed extra time or were not yet ready to ride independently received one-on-one instruction from BikeWalk KC staff, ensuring that everyone had the support they needed to succeed. It was truly rewarding to watch students progress from learning the basics of balancing and pedaling to confidently navigating the course alongside their classmates.

Prior to riding the bike, our students learned the proper ABC checks:

  • A: Air in the tires. Students learned how to feel if there is enough air in tires and also how to add air to their tires if they are too low.
  • B: Brakes. Prior to stepping on the bike, students now know how to check if their front and rear breaks to make sure that they are stopping the wheels all the way.
  • C: Chain: Students were shown what to look for with the bike chain to make sure it is safe to ride. They were also instructed on how to look after the bike chain on their own bikes.

Once on the bike, students learned how to get it moving with their power steps and constant reminders to always be mindful of their surroundings.

To cap off the week, students simulated what it was like to be on the open road riding their bikes. With use of hands signals to indicate to drivers on the road, our students now know the correct ways to make turns and to tell drivers that they are slowing down.

The growth made throughout the week was incredible to see. Smiles filled the gym as students became more comfortable on their bikes and eagerly anticipated each new challenge. Bike Week was a fantastic opportunity for Oakhill students, and the excitement and sense of accomplishment they experienced made it a memorable week for all. We look forward to continuing our partnership with BikeWalk KC for future 3rd - 5th grade students!

Through learning these real-world lifeskills, our students are now more prepared than ever for their experiential learning trips! Current 5th grade families, it is never too early to sign-up for our Horseshoe Canyon Ranch trip this fall. We are excited to prepare our students for the adventures that they will go on through the biking portion of the Horseshoe Canyon Ranch trip!
