Oakhill Bites: The Reason Why We Choose FLIK

Oakhill Bites: The Reason Why We Choose FLIK

If you haven't heard, we recently made a change in our Food and Beverage department starting this past May, as we turn to FISD (Flik Independent School Dining) or FLIK for short. As we navigated through many different food programs throughout the search, it became quickly apparent that FLIK was nacho average food service program. (I'll try to not have any more food jokes!) The way in which they approached food quality and dietary needs impressed us right away.

The program sounded great on paper: all meals prepared fresh, nothing frozen, batch cooking, dietary restrictions as a focal point with Safe Plates and other safety measures, along with many other great promises. With all that being said, what really matters is what the faculty and students actually think of the food. FLIK has provided every meal for our summer camp program, Oakhill Fully Charged, throughout the 40 days of camp, serving over 350 different campers and staff.

On the very first day of camp, I can vividly remember the aroma of freshly grilled chicken tenders, house-made fries, and homemade chocolate chip cookies. This was coupled with a full-fledged salad bar, deli bar, and their famous water works station (fruit and herb-infused water). After the first meal, the camp was immediately hooked. Having the variety and quality of food exposed kids to so many different options and got them to try foods that they now love. We even had staff who were not working this summer come up to school just to have lunch because they loved it so much.

"I can't believe we had shrimp for lunch, this is the greatest lunch ever," said one South Building student, as the FLIK team prepared rosemary grilled shrimp and steamed green beans for lunch.

The way in which this team approached the summer camp is just a preview of what is to come for the school year. We will have both kitchens in each building fully operational, allowing for batch cooking (where food is prepared in shifts to accommodate the wide time gaps in which students come down to lunch throughout the day). The main building will have a Nibbles Bar, which is new for this year, allowing students to try a variety of new foods before they fully commit, and new milk machines offering a plethora of beverage choices for our students. Throughout the year, students can look forward to weekly taste tastings; savory vs sweet or celebrating a food holiday, dessert will be on Fridays, and the secret is out: the Fro-Yo machine is back and ready to serve our community on those special occasions.

Join us for the full-year lunch program to experience this exceptional service for your child. Feel free to come in and join us for lunch, see the quality for yourself, and enjoy the delicious meals our students rave about. I hope you will sign up and join us for a year full of variety, quality, and safety for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Sign up prior to August 13th to receive $100 off the full-year price.
