8th Grader Lucia Moves on to Spelling Bee Finals!

UPDATED 3/3/25: Lucia competed in the regional finals of the Mid-Continent Public Library Spelling Bee on Saturday 3/1. There were 34 competitors at this final bee from Jackson, Clay and Platte County schools. To get to this stage of the competition, competitors must have won their classroom bees, school bees, and scored in the top 1/3 of the semi-final online test, which included both spelling and vocabulary questions. Lucia did very well on the online portion and secured a spot in the finals. Lucia competed in 7 rounds of the competition. The first two rounds eliminated 16 students and there were only 9 students in the seventh round! Lucia was one of those top 9! She had some wild words thrown at her, such as whirlybird and Agalma, and represented Oakhill well throughout her time in the competition. Oakhill students always do well in the final bee, securing a spot in the top 10 each time we've completed! Great job during this spelling season, Lucia!

When you see Lucia Peterson, please congratulate her for making it to the finals of the Mid-Continent Public Library Spelling Bee, an official Scripps National Spelling Bee qualifying competition. Lucia will be competing this Saturday, March 1 at 9:30 am in Independence at the Genealogy Center.

To get to this round of the bee, Lucia had to win a school spelling bee, which took place at ODS in November. She then moved on to the online semifinals. This online test had a time limit of 30 minutes and included 50 spelling and vocabulary questions, some of which were “off list." Lucia scored in the top 1/3 with a great score, which has allowed her to move to this final round.

Good luck on Saturday, Lucia!
