Order in the Court!

Order in the Court!

Each year, the 8th graders study Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Their study is vibrant and active; students read the text aloud, annotating as they go, and they even act out some of the key scenes! In the photo below, the student acting the role of Caesar meets his demise.

In this photo, Caesar has been killed and is in a heap on the ground while the conspirators decide what to do next!

The highlight of the unit is the project at the end, a mock trial. Students, acting as prosecutors and defense attorneys, argue in front of a judge and jury whether or not Brutus and his co-conspirators should be punished for killing Caesar! This year, the trial took place in the council chambers of Gladstone City Hall, adding gravitas to the proceedings.
