These Students Know Their Onions

These Students Know Their Onions

The 8th Grade students have been learning about the Roaring Twenties, specifically the culture (including slang...look up " know your onions"!) and ideological debates that existed during the time period. During the 1920's people were very divided by issues between Traditionalists and Modernists. To help students understand the era, they chose a famous figure and researched them.

These characters were then invited to a "Speakeasy Simulation" (Club Ideology), where students remained in character throughout the whole simulation. They mingled with each famous figure and discussed the issues of the 1920's. Students dressed up in costume and brought business cards and props that represented their characters. After the simulation, students journaled about their interactions and experience at the "speakeasy".

I love this project because students get to bring their learning to life through more than just researching. It is fun, hands-on, and students did a wonderful job diving into their learning! I hope they always remember this project.
