Mapping the World: 5th Graders Master Essential Navigation Skills

Teacher teaching map skills

In 5th grade at Oakhill, students are diving into the exciting world of map reading! While online navigation tools are everywhere, learning how to read a map builds critical thinking, spatial awareness, and problem-solving abilities that last a lifetime. This unit, called Maps vs. Globes, goes beyond just understanding maps—it’s about comparing different types of maps and globes, and exploring the unique information each offers.

Students have been busy mastering key skills like identifying the compass rose, scale, and legend, and using latitude and longitude to locate destinations. They’re also learning to interpret data on various maps, from a map of Greater Kansas City to fun locations like the Chiefs Stadium and Worlds of Fun. A highlight of the unit is exploring a map of Pittsburg State University, where Mrs. Olson's daughter is currently attending school!

To bring it all together, students will cap off the unit by creating their own treasure maps, applying everything they've learned about coordinates, hemispheres, and map features. By mastering these skills, students gain a deeper appreciation for geography and build independence and confidence—whether navigating their neighborhood or plotting an adventurous treasure hunt!
