Concentric Circles

Concentric Circles

First grade students learned about a Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky. He is known for being the pioneer of abstract art. His art used bold colors, geometric shapes and lines which had a strong connection to music. Kandinsky had synesthesia, a brain condition where he could hear colors and see sounds. His work explored the relationship between color and forms to invoke emotions and sounds.

Working on the paper plates

One of his well known paintings, Squares with Concentric Circles, explores how colors interact and symbolize energy moving outward. The circles start from the same central point. The students created circles using colorful paint sticks. They began making a small circle in the center of a paper plate and worked outward changing colors to create their concentric circles.
