Harvest Time

Harvest Time

This year the kindergarten students planted corn in the Living Lab. Three varieties of corn were planted at different times, allowing students to observe the plant life cycle in various stages. Throughout the first quarter kindergarten students observed the corn plants noticing their different heights, colors, plant anatomy, and more. Through this observation process they were able to notice differences as the weeks progressed.

Kindergarten classes harvested corn.

Last week the time finally came to harvest the corn! Many ears were ready to harvest and the most successful variety was the Glass Gem Corn (decorative). What beautiful colors it produced! The students were able to examine the husks, corn silk, kernels, stalk, and leaves of each ear, noticing subtle variations and major differences between the plants.

The harvested corn will now be kept in classrooms for further observation as the students continue this thematic unit throughout the month of November. The students will learn about other corn varieties and the many uses of corn in the United States and in the world!
