Holiday Traditions

Holiday Traditions

Our Oakhill community values family traditions and we love when they are shared throughout the school year. Maria Diaz de la Pena, parent to Andrés and Eddie Vollenweider, recently visited kindergarten and first grade classrooms to share Advent traditions with the students.

Advent Traditions

First, she shared what Advent traditions look like at their home, including the lighting of candles and reflecting on the words hope, peace, joy, and love. Students held hands and thought about the meaning of the first candle: hope. Then, she led the classes in the singing of a Christmas carol. She even brought her special panderetas, or tambourines, to celebrate. Finally, each child was given a traditional Christmas cookie from Spain to try and an ornament to take home that represents the meaning of the first candle.

Mrs. Diaz de la Pena will visit weekly through the month of December to share more about Advent. The students really enjoyed learning about their classmates' holiday traditions and making connections with their own lives. We would love to hear what traditions are important to your family, too.
