Midwestern Marvels

Midwestern Marvels

First grade students have been learning about important Midwesterners during a recent social studies unit. In this engaging unit, students take part in a variety of cross-curricular learning activities to help them learn about famous inventors and pioneers of science, technology, art, and engineering. During this cross-curricular unit students not only learn important facts about Midwesterners, but they also engage in learning activities connecting to the important inventions and accomplishments of each individual!

This week the first graders discussed aviation. They learned about the Wright Brothers, Neil Armstrong and Amelia Earhart. In one activity, they had a mission to join Neil Armstrong on the moon! Students engaged in reading, writing, and social sciences to come up with a packing list of important items first grade scientists would need to take to the moon!

First graders learned about Neil Armstrong.

As they continue to learn about famous Midwesterners, students will work towards a final project where they will write a report taken through the writing process and present their findings using a green screen! This process helps develop their speaking and listening skills. The recordings will be shared using a QR code for the whole Oakhill community to access. Technology, research, art and a lot of creativity are blasting off in first grade!
