The Shoe Tying Club is Looking for New Members

Do you remember when you first learned to tie your shoes and the sense of accomplishment you felt? The First Grade Shoe Tying Club is here to support this important milestone for all students and it has gained many new members since the start of the school year. First grade teachers, Jodi Egbert and Lisa Manley, created the Shoe Tying Club to foster independence and develop self-confidence in this important life skill.

The elementary years are a time where children are developing numerous skills and building independence. They are learning that they can accomplish many tasks on their own, such as picking their own clothes, getting dressed, and of course, tying their own shoes.

When students feel confident in their shoe tying abilities, they can show their new skill to the first grade teachers and become a part of the Shoe Tying Club! Mrs. Egbert and Ms. Manley commemorate the milestone by letting students choose their own set of brand new shoelaces and pose for a photo, which is displayed throughout the school. While first grade is typically the year students work to master this skill, even kindergarten students have joined the shoe tying club!

To help your child with shoe tying you can set a goal. Pick a shoe tying method and stick with it! Consistency is key. Children will learn to have a growth mindset, how to use positive self-talk, and will gain a new life skill!
