Writing To Our Heroes

Writing To Our Heroes
Heroes Day Writing

First grade students recognized the many heroes we have in our community and right here at our school through a writing project on Heroes' Day last week.

In first grade, students are becoming more proficient in using the writing process. They learn that writers make a plan for writing, draft their words, revise their work, and share their writing. Writing independence is encouraged at this grade level. Students use their knowledge of letter and sound connections, phonics skills, and writing tools to help them write efficiently and independently.

Through this process, first graders wrote about community heroes and what they do for us. They were able to share their wok on Heroes' Day with the school community.

To begin, first graders discussed what a hero may look like. Many students have community heroes at home, such as doctors, nurses, first responders, firefighters, police officers, and those that currently serve or have served in the military. Students worked to describe traits of these heroes and how they are helpers, healers, and protectors. The main character trait they used was brave!

Thank you to all of our community heroes and thank you, first grade, for using your powers for good!
