Oakhill's own Mr. Cole presented at the Annual ISACS conference in Columbus, Ohio, last month. He represented Oakhill so well as he passionately spoke to other educators from around the United States about his classroom and living lab here at Oakhill Day School.
The presentation title and description:
Get Out, Kids! Outdoor Education
Learn how Oakhill has invested (money, time, space, and curriculum) in an outdoor education space, how students benefit from the outdoor education space, and some of the unique ways students are encouraged to get outdoors. Hear about service hours in the Living Lab; a Compost Club; Oakhill-garden food served in the cafeteria; and more.
Following his presentation I was able to get more of a behind the scene look into his presentation by discussing his presentation with him and fellow teachers who attended it. They left feeling inspired, and you could see it on their faces.
Please read Mr. Cole's responses to the following questions regarding his experience at ISACS.
1. What inspired you to present at ISACS?
We’ve done some really exciting environmental education projects here and other schools might be able to do them too.
2. How did you feel leading up to presenting, and how did you feel once you were finished?
I approached it like any hands-on, minds-on science class. I wanted attendees - teachers, administrators - to walk away with things they could think about long-term and actions they could implement immediately.
3. What was your favorite part of presenting at ISACS?
It’s important to reflect on successes and challenges. This gave me a way to think about our environmental education approach over the past five years.
4. What do you hope your attendees took away from your presentation?
Hopefully they go back excited and empowered to get their students outside more and now have more practical ideas how to integrate it with curriculum.
5. Would you present at ISACS again?
Yes
Congratulations, Mr. Cole and remarkable job presenting at the Annual ISACS convention.
