Learning Life Skills with Literature

Mrs. Pearce reads No, David to the kindergarten students.

The kindergarten students recently explored the school to learn how to showcase their lifeskills in each area with the help of the beloved back-to-school read aloud, "David Goes to School" by David Shannon.

The students used this story to make connections between the correct way to display lifeskills throughout the school building. Each page of the read aloud led kindergarteners to a new clue where they helped the main character, David, decide how to show his best manners while at school. The students especially enjoyed showcasing what not to do in each new space along the way. Following the clues and learning about new spaces in the school building also led them to be introduced to helpful staff members, such as Mr. Fernandez in the Health Office and Miss Gunderson in the Innovation Lab.

This scavenger hunt allowed students to understand the meaning behind our four main lifeskills: respect, responsibility, kindness, and honesty. Ask a kindergarten student how to display respect in the hallways, kindness on the playground, and honesty while playing classroom games and they will be sure to show you the Oakhill way!
