Rhymes and Reels in Kindergarten

Nursery rhymes seem to bring a feeling of childhood nostalgia every time we hear them. They are built into our memory and seem to flow out even if years have passed since we’ve recited them. Learning, reading, and chanting rhymes helps develop early literacy skills, such as sound and syllable discrimination, rhyme, rhythm, and vocabulary. Recently, the kindergarten students grew these foundational skills during their nursery rhyme unit.

Each year, kindergarten students perform chosen nursery rhymes in class, further developing their listening and speaking skills. This year they combined their nursery rhyme unit and technology to create a special presentation for Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day. Each child chose a rhyme to recite, including making and gathering their own props and costume pieces.

By collaborating with Mrs. Verwers and Ms. Gunderson, students experienced using a green screen to bring their projects to life! Students practiced reciting and performing their rhymes in class, making sure to pay attention to their voice volume, eye contact, and stage presence, including manipulating props. Using Green Screen technology, each child was then transported into their rhyme via a final video presentation for families.
