Scarecrow Day

Scarecrow Day

You know it's fall time at Oakhill when the kindergarten students go on parade for their annual Scarecrow Day! This special tradition not only showcases innovative scarecrow costumes, but includes a day of thematic learning.

Avery on Scarecrow Day

To begin the day, students lined the halls in anticipation of the parade of scarecrows! Students were encouraged to find things they already had at home to wear such as jeans, overalls, plaid shirts, straw hats and boots. The parade is never complete without the traditional scarecrow dance!

After the parade, students spent the day learning through subject integration and thematic activities. Students were exposed to many scarecrow themed read-alouds leading up to the big day. These texts strengthen comprehension skills. Students also worked to strengthen their phonemic awareness and writing skills by creating and writing about their own scarecrows. Snack was even themed around scarecrows! The students worked on following two-step directions and fine motor skills to create their edible scarecrow snacks. Patterns, counting, number recognition, and even more skills were also incorporated throughout the day.

There are many other thematic learning days scheduled throughout the year for kindergarteners. Thematic learning allows students to engage in cross-curriculuar learning opportunities anchored in exploration and fun!
