Time for Chicks

Time for Chicks

Spring is here and signs of renewal, new beginnings, and new life are here! From the garden to the classroom, we are looking for signs of spring! The kindergarteners do not have to look far! They recently started their egg and chick thematic unit and are incubating chicken eggs right now in each classroom and the science lab.

As this unit progresses, students will learn how the incubator acts as a mother hen to help the fertilized eggs develop into new baby chicks! They will also expand their vocabulary knowledge with words such as fertilized, oviparous, and albumen. Kindergarteners will work with diagrams and labels as they learn the parts of an egg and body parts of a chick. During science class they will observe and identify the parts of an egg together using a raw egg and create their own cross section models to show what they learned. Talk about “egg”cellent hands-on science! Students will even take all that they learned to create their own written chick reports. This year they are also creating a video blog detailing the 21 day intubation process from Day 1 to hatching day!

This interactive, hands-on, real life unit gets everyone excited! Check back soon for an update on the kindergarten chicks where you will be able to tune into our ODS Chick Cams to see the chicks in action!
