Bringing Monsters to Life: A 3D Design Adventure

Bringing Monsters to Life: A 3D Design Adventure

Our 3D design unit is officially off to a fun and creative start! After practicing with Tinkercad, our 6th graders are now using their skills to take on a real design challenge - creating custom monsters for their 2nd grade "clients." Last week, both grades came together to read How I Met My Monster, and then the 2nd graders let their imaginations run wild as they sketched out their dream monsters. Now, the 6th graders are hard at work turning those sketches into 3D models, collaborating with the younger students to make sure each monster has the perfect features.

Tinkercad has been an amazing tool, allowing our students to combine creativity with technical design. From practice sessions to full-fledged creations, they’re learning not only how to design in 3D, but also how to adapt and improve their work based on feedback. Once the 2nd graders give their stamp of approval, we’ll 3D print the monsters and move on to the next step: creating digital stories, animations, and/or videos starring each of these monsters.

This is a new unit for me and so far I’ve had the best time watching their skills and confidence grow.  I love that we can blend technology, creativity, and teamwork as we create for real clients. Be sure and ask your student(s) to share their designs with you - I know you'll be impressed.

I can’t wait to share the final projects with you!
