Los soles en la clase de arte

Los soles en la clase de arte

The sixth grade students have been celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by making a Mexican sun. A sun and moon are popular themes in Mexican Folk Art. The Mexican sun or sol (in Spanish) has a strong historical background. It is a symbol of good luck and is associated with spring rituals and renewal, energy and strength. The moon represents calmness, nurturing and beauty.

The students worked in groups to brainstorm ideas for creating a sun. Once they agreed on their design, they cut out the pieces using cardboard. They painted them using acrylic paint and assembled the pieces with glue. They created a good variety of sun designs in different sizes. Some groups also included a moon. The students worked very hard and really enjoyed making their suns. Be sure to check them out at the Global Celebration where they will be on display!
