To practice non-fiction skills, 6th graders have been exploring the topic of (dis)Ability. They have studied articles about various physical differences and neurodivergencies, examined essays written by people who have disabilities, and read biographies of individuals who experience neuro- and physical diversity.

To cap off this unit, the 6th graders took a field trip to the Museum of Deaf History, Arts, and Culture in Olathe.

There, they participated in the Hands-On interactive workshop, led by Chris and Lorie, who are deaf individuals, and interpreters. The students learned ASL words for different country names; they investigated an example of De'VIA (Deaf View/Image Art); and they watched videos of Visual Vernacular performers.

The students enjoyed meeting individuals who communicate differently than they do, and they especially loved the humor of the Visual Vernacular performances. If you see a 6th grader, ask them to show you the sign for America or describe the rooster performance! You can see more photos of the fun here!
