Mr. Kleyh’s Mathematical Candy Conversations

Mr. Kleyh’s Mathematical Candy Conversations

Do you know the handspan of your right or left hand? Have you ever wondered how many pieces of candy you can pick up with just one hand? If you have a bigger hand, might you be able to pick up even more candy? Did you ever think you might be able to predict how much candy a person could pick up? This was the topic of conversation in Mr. Kleyh’s math classes the week of Halloween.

During Mr. Kleyh’s fun, candy-grabbing lesson, his classes traced and measured their dominant hand, predicted and then counted how many pieces of candy they could pick up with that hand. His classes then used the class numbers to predict how many candies staff members could pick up based on the data of the lesson and experiment. If you see a middle school student, be sure to ask about the data that was collected and which staff members participated in this fun and engaging lesson!
