So Much in Commons: Mornings in the South Building

Five young girls sit at a round table in a cafeteria, with a serving area and other people visible in the background.

When you walk into Oakhill's South Building in the morning, you'll immediately see evidence of connection, belonging, and lots of energy! The morning time spent in the Commons is a valued time for students to interact with each other, teachers, and staff.

There are three distinct spaces in the Commons that serve students in three distinct ways. First, the new library space. Mrs. Youngblood has created a warm, welcoming area that is only for reading. Students like 6th graders Marlena, Henry, Katie, and Dash (pictured below, in the library space) can dive into their books in a serene environment.

Four children are reading books in a cozy room with a patterned rug, a blue armchair, and a couch, while a wall with doors and shelves is visible in the background.

Second, there is a space for students to play. At Oakhill, play is an important part of the day, from academics to recess to down time, and students have a space to play in the Commons. Here, 7th graders Connor, Owen, Hughes, and Rowdy, 6th graders Andrew, Lucas, and 4th grader Griffin (from left to right) give advice and support to competitors Drake (left) and Beni (right). This photo also shows another benefit of the morning Commons: interaction across grade levels! At Oakhill, students make connections with peers older and younger than them. It doesn't matter what grade you're in: you can be a chess master here!

A group of boys are gathered around a chessboard on a wooden table in the foreground, with bookshelves filled with books in the background.

Finally, the Commons provides space for eating and chatting. In the cover photo, you see fifth graders (from left) Sydney, Evelyn, Sophia, Ellie, and Avery feeding both their bodies and their social needs. Oakhill provides breakfast to all students, giving them an opportunity to kick their days off with the right nutrients needed.

In the morning Commons, Oakhill Intermediate and Middle School students have the chance to nourish their minds, their emotions, and their bodies. Each student can find a place to belong, setting the tone for a connected, purposeful day!
