Who I Am: A Spanish Language Journey

Who I Am: A Spanish Language Journey

The third graders have been exploring the world of Spanish verbs and learning that the Spanish language has two different verbs that correspond to the English verb “to be.” They are already familiar with one of them, the verb estar, since they have been using the question “¿Cómo estás?” since their Early Childhood years.

The other verb, ser, is new to them, and they are discovering how it is used. Students have written sentences about friends or family members using ser along with a list of adjectives to describe them. For example, “Mi mamá es graciosa,” meaning “My mom is funny.”

Their next step will be to create an online book, using the skills they have developed in the Innovation Lab, to describe themselves. These books, entitled “Yo soy” (“I am”), will serve as their culminating activity and allow themselves to showcase their understanding and use of the verbs they have studied.
